Stelvio Pass

The Stelvio Pass is one of the world’s most iconic motorcycle roads — and for good reason. From Prato, the legendary northern ascent climbs through 48 numbered hairpins before reaching the 2,757 m summit.

The road is as much about the journey as the destination. Tight switchbacks, dramatic alpine walls and constantly changing views make every section feel different. At the top, the famous final sequence of hairpins reveals one of the most recognisable mountain-road panoramas in Europe.

For riders, Stelvio delivers the perfect combination of technical riding, elevation and scenery. It is challenging without being extreme, spectacular without feeling artificial, and memorable from the first corner to the last.

The Stelvio Pass is a high-alpine road, so conditions can change quickly. Even during summer, temperatures at the 2,757 m summit can be considerably lower than in the valleys, while weather can shift from clear skies to cloud or rain in a short time. The pass is also extremely popular, particularly during summer weekends, so an early start can make a significant difference to the riding experience.

The famous hairpins are tight and visibility can be limited, with motorcycles, cars, cyclists and larger vehicles all sharing the road. Ride within your limits and expect traffic around blind corners. Before setting out, it is also worth checking current road conditions and the seasonal opening status of the pass.

The classic Stelvio experience begins in Prato allo Stelvio, where the road gradually climbs into the mountains before the famous hairpins begin. From here, 48 numbered switchbacks climb dramatically towards the summit, with each corner revealing a new perspective of the mountain landscape.

At 2,757 m, the summit is the natural place to stop and take in the surroundings before continuing towards Bormio. The southern descent has a noticeably different character, with fewer hairpins and a more open, flowing road.

Riding both sides gives you the complete Stelvio experience — from the technical northern ascent and its legendary sequence of corners to the sweeping descent towards Bormio.
