Stelvio Pass
Why Ride It
The Stelvio Pass is one of the world’s most iconic motorcycle roads โ and for good reason. From Prato allo Stelvio, the legendary northern ascent climbs through 48 numbered hairpins before reaching the 2,757 m summit. The road rises dramatically above the valley, with each section revealing a new perspective of the surrounding peaks and the Ortler massif.
The road is as much about the journey as the destination. Tight switchbacks, steep mountain walls and constantly changing views give the northern ascent its unmistakable character, while the descent towards Bormio offers a different kind of riding experience. The landscape gradually opens up as the road drops into the Braulio Valley, creating a striking contrast with the exposed upper section of the pass.
For riders, Stelvio delivers an exceptional combination of technical riding, elevation and scenery. The northern side demands concentration through its famous sequence of hairpins, while the Bormio side brings a more flowing rhythm, tighter mountain sections and several short tunnels. Riding both sides makes the experience feel much more complete than simply reaching the summit.
This is not simply a pass to cross. It is a road that rewards you for paying attention to every corner, every change in elevation and every view that opens beyond the next hairpin.
Ride The Line
Good To Know
The Stelvio Pass is a high-alpine road, so conditions can change quickly. Even during summer, temperatures at the 2,757 m summit can be considerably lower than in the valleys, while weather can shift from clear skies to cloud, rain or even snow in a short time. The pass is also extremely popular during the main riding season, particularly on summer weekends, so an early start can make a significant difference to the riding experience. The road is seasonally closed when conditions at altitude make the crossing unsafe.

The Ride Beyond Stelvio route begins in Prato allo Stelvio, where the road gradually climbs through the upper Vinschgau Valley towards the mountains. As the elevation increases, the landscape becomes increasingly alpine before the famous sequence of numbered hairpins begins. From here, 48 corners climb dramatically across the mountainside towards the summit.
At 2,757 m, the Stelvio summit is the natural high point of the route and one of the most recognisable locations in European motorcycling. After taking in the views, the route continues towards Bormio on the opposite side of the pass. The character of the road changes noticeably as the landscape opens into the Braulio Valley.
The descent towards Bormio is more varied than the famous northern ascent, combining flowing sections with tighter corners and short mountain tunnels. Together, the two sides create a much more complete riding experience than either ascent alone.
Ride the legendary hairpins. Cross the summit. Then keep riding. The Stelvio is best experienced as a complete journey from valley to valley.
