THE EXPERIENCE

Why Ride It

Passo Giau is one of the Dolomites’ most rewarding motorcycle passes. Rising to 2,236 m between Selva di Cadore and the valleys around Cortina d’Ampezzo, the road climbs into an open alpine landscape where the mountains seem to rise directly from the road.

The approach from Selva di Cadore is where the riding really comes alive. A succession of tight hairpins winds up the mountainside, with the road repeatedly changing direction as the elevation builds. Unlike some of the more famous Dolomite passes, Giau quickly feels removed from the valleys below, giving the climb a remarkably pure mountain-road character.

At the summit, the road opens into one of the most impressive landscapes in the Dolomites. The surrounding peaks dominate the horizon, while the lack of dense development keeps the focus firmly on the mountains and the road itself. For riders, it is a rare combination of technical corners and uninterrupted alpine scenery.

Passo Giau does not need the fame of Stelvio to make an impression. Ride it once, and the mountain does the rest.

Good To Know

Passo Giau is a high mountain road where weather can change quickly, particularly around the 2,236 m summit. Temperatures can be considerably lower than in the surrounding valleys, even during summer. The pass is popular with motorcyclists and cyclists, although it generally feels quieter than some of the Dolomites’ more famous routes. An early start is recommended for the best riding experience, especially during the main summer season.

Route Notes

The Ride Beyond Passo Giau route begins in Selva di Cadore, where the road starts climbing gradually through the valley before becoming increasingly steep and technical. As the trees thin out, the route enters the open alpine landscape that defines the upper section of the pass.

The final climb is the defining section of the route. A series of tight hairpins carries the road towards the summit, with each corner gaining more elevation and revealing wider views across the surrounding Dolomite peaks. The road’s rhythm changes constantly between short straights and tight switchbacks.

At 2,236 m, the summit provides a natural point to stop before continuing along the full Ride Beyond route. From here, the road descends away from the high plateau and the landscape gradually changes again as the route moves back towards the lower valleys.

Chase the corners. Earn the summit. Then keep riding.
