THE EXPERIENCE

Why Ride It

The North Coast 500 is one of Britain’s great motorcycle journeys, linking more than 500 miles of dramatic coastline, remote Highland roads and some of Scotland’s most spectacular landscapes. From Inverness, the route winds around the northern Highlands before returning through a constantly changing mix of mountains, lochs, beaches and open moorland.

What makes the NC500 special is not one single road or mountain pass. It is the sheer variety of the journey. One moment you are following an empty coastal road above the sea, the next you are threading through mountains or climbing a narrow single-track road into the Highlands. The landscape changes constantly, while the sense of remoteness remains a defining part of the experience.

For riders, the route offers a rare combination of freedom and adventure. The famous Bealach na Bà provides the most concentrated section of climbing and hairpins, while the northern and western sections deliver long, flowing roads where the landscape becomes the main attraction. It is a route that rewards patience rather than speed.

The NC500 is not about reaching the next destination quickly. It is about giving the road time to unfold.

BEFORE YOU RIDE

Good To Know

The NC500 is best approached as a journey rather than a route to complete as quickly as possible. Much of the route uses narrow single-track roads with passing places, particularly in the northwest, so patience and consideration for other road users are essential. Weather can change quickly in the Highlands, and fuel stations can be widely spaced in remote areas. Summer brings longer daylight but also the highest visitor numbers, while some of the most remote roads can feel significantly quieter outside peak periods.

Route Notes

The Ride Beyond NC500 begins in Inverness and heads west towards the Highlands, with the route quickly leaving the city behind for increasingly remote landscapes. The western section includes the iconic climb over Bealach na Bà before continuing north through Applecross, Torridon and the rugged coastline around Wester Ross.

From the west coast, the route continues through some of the most remote roads in Scotland, passing through areas around Ullapool, Lochinver and Kylesku before reaching the northern coast. Here, the character changes again as the road follows dramatic sea cliffs, beaches and open Highland landscapes towards Durness and the far north.

The northern section continues east towards John o’ Groats before turning south through Caithness and the eastern Highlands. From here, the route gradually returns towards Inverness, completing the loop and bringing together the very different landscapes encountered along the way.

Ride slowly. Look beyond the next corner. Let the Highlands set the pace.
