Icefields Parkway

The Icefields Parkway is one of the world’s great scenic motorcycle roads, running through the heart of the Canadian Rockies between Jasper and Lake Louise. The road passes beneath enormous mountain walls, alongside glacial lakes and through some of Canada’s most spectacular wilderness.

What makes the Parkway special is its scale. The road rarely feels confined to a single mountain or valley, instead moving through a constantly changing sequence of landscapes. Turquoise lakes appear between the peaks, glaciers hang above the valleys and wildlife can emerge beside the road with almost no warning.

For riders, this is less about technical cornering and more about the experience of travelling through a truly vast mountain environment. The road flows naturally through the landscape, allowing long stretches of riding where the views become as important as the road itself.

Some roads challenge the rider. The Icefields Parkway overwhelms the rider with scale.

The Icefields Parkway runs through a remote mountain environment where weather and road conditions can change quickly. Snow and freezing temperatures can occur even during summer at higher elevations. Wildlife is common along the route, so remain alert and never approach animals at the roadside. Fuel and services are limited, particularly between the main towns, so plan fuel stops in advance. The route also passes through protected national park areas where park fees and local regulations apply.

The Ride Beyond route follows the Icefields Parkway through the Canadian Rockies, connecting Jasper and Lake Louise along one of the most spectacular mountain corridors in North America. From the beginning, the road moves through expansive valleys surrounded by towering peaks.

As the route continues south, the landscape becomes increasingly alpine. The road passes numerous glacial lakes and viewpoints before reaching the Columbia Icefield, where the surrounding mountains and glaciers dominate the horizon.

The highest section of the route reaches approximately 2,088 m at Sunwapta Pass, marking the transition between Jasper and Banff National Parks. From here, the road continues through increasingly dramatic mountain scenery before eventually descending towards Lake Louise.

Don’t rush the Rockies. The road is only part of the journey.
