THE EXPERIENCE

Why Ride It

Milford Road is one of New Zealand’s most spectacular motorcycle journeys, cutting deep into the remote wilderness of Fiordland National Park. The road connects Te Anau with Milford Sound, passing through dense rainforest, glacial valleys and towering mountains before reaching the 945 m Homer Tunnel.

The landscape changes constantly as the road moves deeper into Fiordland. Forested sections give way to vast valleys surrounded by steep mountain walls, while waterfalls appear along the roadside after periods of rain. The further you travel, the more isolated the road feels.

For riders, Milford Road is about the complete journey rather than a single technical section. The road provides a steady rhythm of flowing corners and elevation changes while the surrounding landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. The combination of remote wilderness and an exceptionally scenic road makes it one of the world’s great motorcycle rides.

Here, the destination is spectacular. But the road to get there is the real adventure.

BEFORE YOU RIDE

Good To Know

Milford Road runs through one of the wettest regions of New Zealand, so rain and rapidly changing conditions are part of the experience. Waterfalls can appear or become dramatically larger after heavy rainfall, while cloud can quickly reduce visibility around the higher sections. Fuel and services are extremely limited once you leave Te Anau, so start with enough fuel for the journey. Wildlife and other road users can also appear unexpectedly on the remote sections.

Route Notes

The Ride Beyond route begins in Te Anau and follows State Highway 94 deep into Fiordland National Park. The road initially winds through open countryside before gradually entering dense native forest as the mountains close in around the route.

Further into Fiordland, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. The road passes through the Eglinton Valley before climbing towards the higher mountain sections, where steep rock walls and waterfalls dominate the surroundings.

The final approach to Milford Sound leads through the Homer Tunnel at 945 m before descending towards the fiord. The tunnel marks a dramatic transition from the high mountain landscape into the valley beyond, where the route finally reaches Milford Sound.

Follow the valley. Enter the mountains. Earn the fiord.
