THE EXPERIENCE

Why Ride It

Going-to-the-Sun Road is one of America’s most spectacular mountain roads. Crossing the heart of Glacier National Park, the route climbs from the valleys into high alpine terrain before reaching Logan Pass at 2,026 m. Along the way, the road passes beneath towering mountain walls, waterfalls and vast alpine meadows.

The road itself is as impressive as the landscape around it. Built into the mountainside, it winds through a series of sweeping bends and tighter sections, with dramatic drops and rock faces appearing beside the road. The famous Garden Wall section is particularly striking, as the road seems to cling directly to the mountainside high above the valley.

For riders, the attraction is the combination of road and environment. The riding is engaging without being relentlessly technical, leaving enough time to take in the scale of Glacier National Park. Wildlife, changing weather and enormous views add another dimension to the experience.

This is more than a mountain road. It is a journey through the heart of Glacier National Park.

Good To Know

Going-to-the-Sun Road is a high mountain road with a short operating season due to heavy winter snowfall. Conditions can change quickly at altitude, even during summer, and sections of the road can be affected by weather or maintenance. The road is also extremely popular, so traffic can be significant during peak periods. Vehicle restrictions apply on parts of the route, and seasonal access rules can change, so check the current Glacier National Park conditions before riding.

Route Notes

The Ride Beyond route follows Going-to-the-Sun Road through Glacier National Park, beginning in the lower valleys before gradually climbing into the mountains. The road follows Lake McDonald before entering increasingly rugged terrain, with forest giving way to exposed rock faces and alpine vegetation.

The defining section begins as the road climbs towards Logan Pass. A series of bends carries the route along the mountainside, with the Garden Wall rising above and dramatic views opening across the surrounding valleys.

At 2,026 m, Logan Pass is the highest point of the route and provides the natural centrepiece of the ride. From here, the road continues across the Continental Divide before descending through the eastern side of Glacier National Park.

Ride the mountain. Watch the valley. Keep your eyes moving โ€” the road is only half the story.
