THE EXPERIENCE

Why Ride It

The Transfăgărășan is one of Europe’s most celebrated motorcycle roads — a spectacular crossing of the Southern Carpathians that climbs deep into the Făgăraș Mountains. From Curtea de Argeș, the road gradually leaves the lower valleys behind before rising towards the high alpine section and the 2,042 m Bâlea Tunnel.

The character of the road changes constantly as the elevation increases. Fast, flowing sections through the lower mountains eventually give way to tighter corners and dramatic switchbacks, with the landscape becoming increasingly open as the road approaches the high point. Above the tree line, the scale of the mountains becomes the dominant feature.

For riders, the Transfăgărășan delivers exactly the combination that makes a mountain road memorable: technical corners, elevation, dramatic scenery and a genuine sense of travelling through the mountains rather than simply over them. The northern section is particularly rewarding, with its famous sequence of bends descending from the high plateau towards the valleys below.

This is not a road built for getting somewhere quickly. It is a road built for looking ahead, leaning in and enjoying every change of direction.

Good To Know

The Transfăgărășan is a high mountain road with a limited operating season, and the upper section can remain closed outside the warmer months due to snow and weather conditions. Conditions can change quickly at altitude, even during summer. The route is also extremely popular, particularly around Bâlea Lake and the high mountain section, so expect traffic and pedestrians at the busiest points. Check current road conditions and opening status before setting out.

Route Notes

The Ride Beyond route begins in Curtea de Argeș and follows the road north towards the Făgăraș Mountains. The lower section winds through forested valleys, gradually gaining elevation as the road becomes increasingly remote and the mountains begin to dominate the landscape.

As the route climbs higher, the corners become tighter and the road begins to reveal the character that made the Transfăgărășan famous. A succession of hairpins carries the road towards Bâlea Lake and the high point of the route, with increasingly dramatic views opening across the surrounding mountains.

The route reaches its highest section at the Bâlea Tunnel, at approximately 2,042 m. From here, the road continues through the northern side of the mountains, descending through one of the most memorable sequences of bends on the entire route before eventually returning towards the lower valleys.

Climb into the mountains. Chase the switchbacks. Let the Carpathians set the pace.
