Karakoram Highway
Why Ride It
The Karakoram Highway is one of the world’s great motorcycle journeys, linking Pakistan’s capital with the high-altitude mountains of the Karakoram. The route follows an ancient trading corridor through the Indus Valley and into some of the most dramatic mountain terrain on earth, eventually reaching Khunjerab Pass on the PakistanโChina border.
What makes the ride exceptional is the way the landscape evolves over such a long distance. The journey begins around Islamabad before entering increasingly rugged terrain and following the Indus River towards Chilas. As the road continues north, enormous mountain walls replace the lower valleys, with Nanga Parbat providing one of the defining landmarks of the route.
Beyond Gilgit, the route enters the Hunza Valley, where the riding becomes increasingly spectacular. Karimabad, Attabad Lake and Passu provide some of the journey’s most memorable sections, while the road continues to climb towards the high Karakoram. The combination of enormous peaks, deep valleys, glacial landscapes and remote mountain settlements gives the route an unmistakable sense of scale.
Few motorcycle routes offer such a dramatic progression from lowland foothills to extreme mountain terrain. The Karakoram Highway is not simply a road through the mountains; it is a journey into the heart of one of the world’s great mountain ranges.
Ride The Line
Good To Know
The Karakoram Highway crosses remote and high-altitude terrain, so conditions can change quickly and sections of road may be affected by landslides, rockfall, flooding or roadworks. The route reaches approximately 4,693 metres at Khunjerab Pass, making altitude a serious consideration during the final stages. Fuel, accommodation and other services become increasingly limited farther north, so planning ahead is essential. Riders should also check current access, security and border regulations before travelling, particularly for the Khunjerab section.

The Ride Beyond route begins in Islamabad, heading northwest towards the mountains before reaching the Indus Valley. From here, the Karakoram Highway follows the river through increasingly dramatic terrain towards Chilas, with the surrounding landscape becoming progressively more rugged as the road pushes deeper into the mountains.
The landscape changes again around Nanga Parbat, one of the world’s highest mountains and one of the defining landmarks of the journey. From Chilas, the route continues towards Gilgit, where the surrounding valleys begin to narrow and the scale of the mountains becomes increasingly impressive.
From Gilgit, the road enters the legendary Hunza Valley. Karimabad makes a natural stop before the route continues towards Attabad Lake and Passu, where enormous peaks, glaciers and narrow valleys create some of the most spectacular scenery of the entire ride. The road remains the focus, but the surrounding landscape increasingly dominates the experience.
The final section passes through Sost and climbs progressively higher into the Karakoram before reaching Khunjerab Pass, the dramatic endpoint of the Ride Beyond route. From the foothills of Islamabad to the high-altitude heart of the Karakoram, this is a journey defined by distance, elevation and scale.
