Garden Route
Why Ride It
South Africa’s Garden Route is one of the country’s defining motorcycle journeys, combining coastal roads, mountain passes, indigenous forests and quiet rural landscapes along the southern coast. The route connects Mossel Bay with the forests and coastline of the Eastern Cape, creating a ride that feels remarkably varied without requiring extreme distances or altitude.
The riding constantly changes character. Coastal sections around Wilderness and Plettenberg Bay offer sweeping roads and ocean views, while the Seven Passes Road introduces tighter corners and a more traditional mountain-road rhythm. Further east, quieter roads through the Tsitsikamma region replace the busier main routes, giving the ride a stronger sense of immersion and freedom.
What makes the Garden Route particularly rewarding is the combination of landscapes. Dense forests can appear almost immediately after open coastal scenery, while mountain roads lead back towards the ocean and small rural roads provide an alternative to the main N2. The route rewards riders who choose the slower roads and allow time to experience the changing surroundings rather than simply covering the distance.
The Garden Route is less about one defining road than the way several different riding environments come together. Coast, mountains, forest and open road create a journey that feels distinctly South African from beginning to end.
Ride The Line
Good To Know
Conditions along the Garden Route can vary between the exposed coast, mountain roads and forest sections. Rain is possible throughout the year, with wet surfaces and reduced visibility particularly relevant around the forests and mountain passes. The Seven Passes Road and historic R102 can be considerably slower than the main N2 and may include uneven surfaces or sections requiring extra care. Wildlife and pedestrians can also appear unexpectedly on quieter roads. Fuel and services are readily available in the larger towns, but it is still sensible to refuel before longer remote sections.

The Ride Beyond route begins in Mossel Bay, following the coast towards George and Wilderness. The landscape quickly becomes greener as the route moves into the heart of the Garden Route, with the Indian Ocean remaining a recurring presence before the road turns inland towards the forested mountains.
Rather than staying entirely on the N2, the route takes the historic Seven Passes Road towards Knysna. This quieter alternative adds a very different riding character, winding through dense vegetation and mountainous terrain with a succession of flowing bends and narrower sections. It is one of the defining riding experiences of the route.
From Knysna, the route continues towards Plettenberg Bay before leaving the main road for the quieter roads towards Nature’s Valley. The scenery becomes increasingly rural and forested, creating a more secluded section before the route reaches the Tsitsikamma landscape.
The final section follows the historic R102 through the forests around Coldstream before reaching Storms River and continuing towards Storms River Mouth. The journey finishes beside the Indian Ocean, where the rugged coastline and dense Tsitsikamma forests provide a fitting end to the ride.
The Garden Route is best experienced by choosing the roads that slow you down. The bends, forests and coastline are not obstacles between destinations — they are the reason to ride here.
