THE EXPERIENCE

Why Ride It

Timmelsjoch Pass is one of the great motorcycle roads of the Eastern Alps, connecting Austria’s ร–tztal with Italy’s Passeier Valley across a 2,474-metre mountain crossing. Also known as Passo del Rombo on the Italian side, the pass combines high-altitude scenery with a remarkably varied road that changes character as it crosses the Alpine divide.

The northern approach from Sรถlden climbs steadily through the ร–tztal, with the landscape becoming increasingly exposed as the road gains altitude. Long sweeping bends lead towards the summit before the route reaches its most dramatic terrain. Beyond the pass, the Italian side descends through a series of tighter corners and increasingly rugged mountain scenery towards Moos and the Passeier Valley.

For riders, Timmelsjoch strikes a strong balance between technical riding and flowing Alpine road. The northern climb allows you to settle into a rhythm before the tighter Italian descent demands more concentration. The combination of elevation, changing road character and relatively low traffic makes the crossing feel like a genuine journey through the mountains rather than simply a pass to tick off.

The best part of Timmelsjoch is the transition between two very different sides of the Alps. Cross the summit, change countries and let the road’s character change beneath you.

Good To Know

Timmelsjoch is a seasonal high-alpine pass and is normally closed during the winter months because of snow. Opening dates can vary with conditions, and weather can change rapidly near the 2,474-metre summit. A toll is charged for using the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road, and the road can become busier during peak summer periods. Check current opening status, weather and road conditions before setting out.

Route Notes

The Ride Beyond route begins in Sรถlden and follows the ร–tztal valley south towards Obergurgl. The road gradually gains altitude as the valley narrows, with increasingly open views towards the surrounding peaks. From Obergurgl, the climb becomes more exposed as the route heads towards the high Alpine section.

The final approach to Timmelsjoch combines long mountain bends with tighter corners as the road climbs towards the 2,474-metre summit. The landscape becomes increasingly barren and dramatic above the tree line, marking a clear transition from the lower ร–tztal to the high mountain environment around the pass.

From the summit, the route crosses into Italy and begins its descent towards Moos in Passeier. The character changes noticeably, with tighter bends and a narrower mountain road winding down through the rugged terrain. The route continues through the Passeier Valley before reaching St. Leonhard in Passeier.

Timmelsjoch is best ridden as a complete crossing. The real reward is not simply reaching the highest point, but experiencing the dramatic change from the Austrian Alps to the Italian mountainside.
