Million Dollar Highway
Why Ride It
The Million Dollar Highway is one of the defining motorcycle roads of the American West. This section of US-550 connects Durango, Silverton and Ouray through the San Juan Mountains, reaching 3,358 metres at Red Mountain Pass and delivering a remarkable combination of elevation, exposure and rugged mountain scenery.
Leaving Durango, the road gradually enters the high country, with the landscape becoming increasingly mountainous as US-550 follows the Animas River towards Silverton. The riding is varied rather than relentlessly technical, with flowing bends and changing gradients building towards the more demanding terrain around Red Mountain Pass.
The character of the road changes again after Silverton. The climb towards Red Mountain Pass becomes steeper and more exposed, with the highway winding across slopes that leave little doubt about the scale of the surrounding mountains. For a motorcyclist, it is this combination of technical sections, elevation and exposure that makes the route memorable rather than simply the number of corners.
The Million Dollar Highway rewards riders who are willing to slow down and take in the terrain around them. Here, the road is not separate from the landscape; it is the line that carries you through it.
Ride The Line
Good To Know
Red Mountain Pass is a high-altitude mountain crossing where weather and road conditions can change quickly. Snow, ice, rockfall and temporary closures are possible outside the main riding season, while summer can bring increased traffic and road works. Fuel and services are available in Durango, Silverton and Ouray, but there are long stretches between them, so starting with enough fuel is sensible. At more than 3,300 metres, temperatures can also be considerably lower than in the valleys.

The Ride Beyond route starts in Durango and heads north on US-550, gradually leaving the lower valley behind as the road follows the Animas River into the San Juan Mountains. The road becomes progressively more mountainous on the approach to Silverton, with long flowing sections providing a natural introduction to the higher terrain.
Silverton marks the beginning of the most famous part of the ride. From here, US-550 climbs towards Red Mountain Pass through increasingly rugged terrain, with steep slopes, exposed sections and a series of demanding bends. The summit at 3,358 metres is the highest point of the route and the defining landmark of the Million Dollar Highway.
From Red Mountain Pass, the road descends towards Ouray, continuing through steep mountain terrain before gradually dropping back towards the valley. The final section retains the dramatic character of the San Juan Mountains while becoming more enclosed as the road approaches Ouray.
Ride Beyond treats DurangoโOuray as a complete mountain ride rather than simply a pass crossing. The approach builds the atmosphere, Red Mountain Pass delivers the drama, and the descent into Ouray provides the natural finish.
